Westminster Kingsway College is located in the centre of Westminster off Victoria Street. The building comprises of sections dating back to various periods some which are listed. As part of the College’s plan for the future, an application was submitted to the Learning skills Council for the refurbishment of the 7,000m² premises.
The refurbishment will include the demolition of part of the four storey building to create a new learning resource centre, library, main entrance hall, teaching spaces, additional teaching kitchens, shop, basement plant area etc whilst retaining the facade of this part of the building. The remainder of the building will be upgraded, re-modelled and refurbished including the replacement of all mechanical and electrical engineering services. This includes the complete renewal of engineering services to 17 teaching kitchens which include pastry kitchens, oriental kitchen, general kitchen plus all supporting areas.
This work is being undertaken whilst the building remains operational as a College. JPA have worked with the other design team members and the Client’s representatives to achieve a phased scheme which will meet the College’s requirements within the budget set. At this time the Scheme has achieved RIBA stage D/E and has just received planning permission from Westminster Council. The scheme has been put on hold with virtually all other HE schemes awaiting a decision from The Learning Skills Council on funding.
